WCW

Though the WCW name dates back to only the early 90s, the company that became World Championship Wrestling has its roots in the Crockett family territory that promoted wrestling in the Carolinas and Virginia for decades. Jim Crockett Promotions stretches back to the 1930s under Jim Crockett Sr., and his son, Jim Crockett Jr., attempted to take the company national in the 1980s as the last remaining major player in the NWA.

After absorbing other territories like Florida and Mid-South, Jim Crockett hit financial trouble and sold his company in 1988 to Ted Turner, who for years had broadcast Crockett’s programming on his cable channel, WTBS. The company continued to use the NWA name for several years before phasing it out in favor of the name World Championship Wrestling, which had been the name of the flagship show on TBS. Under the WCW name, the company grew into the only major competitor to the WWF on a national stage. After numerous leadership changes through the years and corporate mergers putting them under the AOL/Time Warner umbrella, a struggling WCW was sold to the WWF in 2001, marking the official end of the promotion.

The WCW library includes footage from both before and after the sale of the company to Ted Turner, including pay-per-view shows, television broadcasts, cable TV specials, and home video releases.
